Groundbreaking of the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts, March 2014.
Carmen Rose Hepworth was a native of Delta, Utah, and a 1953 graduate of Southern Utah University. She studied education and became an elementary school teacher, serving the majority of her career in the Iron County School District. Carmen was an active and involved member of the SUU Alumni Association and provided valuable service to the University and the Utah Shakespeare Festival.
Her husband Mel, a 1950 alumnus, was also an elementary school teacher and principal. Even though they never had children of their own, Carmen and Mel influenced the lives of hundreds of students by serving as strong role models and loving mentors.
Carmen had the unique ability of knowing how to get the most out of her young students. She demanded excellence and taught her students to always do more than was expected, both in the academics and in their personal lives.
In memory of Carmen Hepworth, this award is presented each year at the Thunderbirds Awards Ceremony by the Alumni Relations Office to an individual who demonstrates a commitment to bettering the lives of others and strengthening Southern Utah University.
