What is a semester?

A semester is an academic time period when classes are in session.

How long is a semester?

A semester is around 14-18 weeks, making up half of the full academic year. Currently at Southern Utah University, semesters are 15 weeks of instructional time and one week of finals with breaks throughout. However, starting in January 2020, the semesters will be 14 weeks of instructional time with one week of finals to allow for students to take part in the three-year degree initiative if they choose.

What is the three-year degree initiative?

This is an optional program that will be offered to students who wish to graduate in a shorter period of time than the traditional four years of undergraduate school. To finish a degree in three years, students will enroll in all three semesters (fall, spring, and summer) during their first and second years at SUU. By taking all three semesters for the first two years, the 8 semesters can be completed in three years instead of four.

When does each semester start?

The fall 2019 semester starts on Monday, August 26th, 2019.

The spring 2020 semester starts Thursday, January 9, 2020.

The summer 2020 semester starts on Monday, May 11, 2020.

When is finals week at SUU?

The fall 2019 finals week begins on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, and ends on Friday, December 13, 2019.

The spring 2020 finals week begins on Monday, April 20, 2020, and ends on Thursday, April 23, 2020.

Graduation is on Friday, April 24, 2020.
