What is the Southern Utah University Student Association?

Southern Utah Student Association representatives When you come to SUU, you are automatically enrolled of the biggest organization on campus called, the Southern Utah University Student Association or SUUSA for short. The best part is that you don't have to sign up, interview or audition for it--you only have to be a student at SUU. This organization is full of dedicated student leaders who are elected and appointed to carry out a wide variety of functions. SUUSA is amazing because not only will the help better your experience at SUU, but as a member, you will have the opportunity to play a role in that, too!

Here are three things SUUSA will do for you as soon as you walk on campus:

Involvement: Connecting with students from all around campus is never a bad action, and joining a club or organization will help you accomplish just that. SUUSA helps you get involved by hosting Paint the Town Red and Campus Connects that allow students to check out the diverse range of clubs that students can join. They also help clubs and organizations travel to conferences or competitions, buying uniforms, and reserving space on campus.

Represent You: Through SUUSA you are able to share your feedback about your experience at SUU. There are six Academic Senators, two Division Senators, and six Special Interest Group Representatives that are there to serve you by hearing and advocating for your thoughts and concerns. It is easy to get in touch with one of the many officers in SUUSA. These officer sits on various university committees, carry out academic initiatives, and participates in a weekly open forum meeting. The senate knows how to get things done on campus and wants to help students in all of their endeavors.

Empower Change: SUUSA wants you to be a part of enhancing the college experience at SUU. Through using the student feedback system My SUU Voice students can share their voice and make change. Over the past years, SUUSA has helped students keep the library open longer, create and implement academic policies, and re-model the student center. SUUSA also hosts an annual “Shark Tank” event where students will pitch an idea on how to better campus to a panel of judges and can win the competition to receive funding to complete their project. There are several ways to create change around campus and SUUSA wants to be there to support you every step of the way.

D’Mia Lamar, 2018-19 Student Body President, stated that the benefits of an empowered student voice include the following: happier and more engaged students, students becoming more connected with the university, students feel heard and valued, student driven changes are discussed and/or made, students help shape the university.

Southern Utah University Student Association is a great first organization that will help you get your foot in the door on campus. If there is anything you ever need during your time here at SUU, SUUSA will have your back.
