DRC Assignment Extension Accommodations
Assignment extensions as an accommodation are provided directly by the professor based on their course objectives and essential elements of their course. In order to receive this accommodation, you will need to have this accommodation listed on your official accommodation letter for the term in which you are requesting the accommodations.
Once you have used the Activate Current Accommodations Form for the current semester, you will receive an email containing a link to your accommodation letter. This letter will list the accommodations you have been approved for by the DRC.
Assignment extensions are provided when you experiences symptoms of your condition that impact your ability to complete an assignment. The typical extension period is 48 hours from the posted due date, but this may be longer depending on your need and the professor's judgement. There are some important guidelines to consider when utilizing this accommodation.
Assignment extension accommodations are for assignments only. Any exams, quizzes, labs, or scheduled discussions or presentations do not qualify for this extension. These would only be permitted based on the professor's judgement of the course objectives and essential elements of the course.
If you are requesting this accommodation and the due date has passed, the extension will still be based on the original assignment due date. If you are requesting this extension over a weekend or holiday, you are expected to make an attempt to submit your assignment within the extension period. If you are blocked from submitting, either by Canvas or other technical limitations, you are expected to make a good faith attempt to submit the completed work. For example, email your professor the completed assignment.
You can reach out to your professor either by email, Canvas message, or in person. Most professors list their preferred method of contact on the course syllabus (which is usually posted in Canvas), so be sure to refer to your syllabus when possible.
When asking for an extension for an assignment, it is important to be very clear with your request. Be sure to clearly define the course section number, assignment name, and any information needed to appropriately complete and turn in the assignment. It is not necessary for you to explain your symptoms to your professor, but you are more than welcome to have a dialogue with your professor about the problems you are having with the assignment. Remember that the DRC verifies and protects your ADA information, so your instructor does not need to be informed about your specific symptoms or disability during these discussions.
Below is an example of an email you can send to your instructor:
Good afternoon Professor,
I am reaching out to let you know that I need to use my assignment extension accommodation for Math 1010-01 Assignment Problem Set 1. I am having trouble completing this assignment on time due to symptoms related to my disability and just need a little more time to turn it in.
Thank you for your support,
