Graduate Certificates

SUU’s MIS Program Offers Two New Graduate Certificates!

Southern Utah University’s Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) program offers graduate certificates in Online Teaching and Leadership Studies, two extremely valuable and relevant skills sought by employers today.

Leadership Studies

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) (2016), "More than 80 percent of responding employers said they look for evidence of leadership skills on [a] candidate's resume, and nearly as many seek out indications that the candidate is able to work in a team" (para. 4). The Leadership Studies Graduate Certificate can fulfill a student's leadership educational training. In fact, through three separate courses, students will learn the following:

  • How to analyze basic leadership approaches, processes, and traits
  • How to gain a foundational knowledge of leadership by identifying skills and styles of leadership
  • How to draft a vision plan to include communication and innovation
  • How to delve deeper into interpersonal portions of leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • How to develop and apply their own individual expertise
  • How psychological aspects of leadership can impact culture, ethics, and gender
  • How to create and lead effective groups and teams
  • How to create a continuous improvement plan
  • How to craft a leadership eportfolio (created over the three course series)

Online Teaching

NACE (2020), "through a task force of college career services and HR/staffing professionals, has developed a definition, based on extensive research among employers, and identified eight competencies associated with career readiness" (para. 2). One of those competencies includes Digital Technology which NACE describes as, "Leverage existing digital technologies ethically and efficiently to solve problems, complete tasks, and accomplish goals. The individual demonstrates effective adaptability to new and emerging technologies" (para. 6). Through the MIS Program's Online Teaching Graduate Certificate, and specifically through the following three courses, a student will learn course design. By the end of the third course, they will have built a Canvas learning management system (LMS) course on a topic of their choice. Additionally, students will learn the following:

  • How fundamentals of online teaching, learning, and design work together
  • How theory and knowledge build upon practical experiences by studying in, and fulfilling assignments within, a learning management system (LMS)
  • How to develop a course shell of an online course, including the most basic elements
  • How to utilize the fundamentals of instructional design for online learning
  • How theory, models, interviewing, and design tools are utilized to increase learner breadth and depth of understanding to develop quality online learning experiences
  • How to utilize the fundamentals of effective online learning assessments
  • How theory and tangible skills relate to assessment within online discussions, papers, projects, games, and so forth
  • How to develop and practice skills within a learning management system
  • How an online course is vetted through industry national standards such as Quality Matters
