Occupational health is centered on finding and achieving personal satisfaction from your work and feeling like you belong and are making a difference at your work all while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. A work-life balance includes setting professional boundaries in regards to your time and treatment, having a healthy identity outside of work, and implementing self care.

Environmental Health

We are always interacting with and responding to the environments around us, so it is an integral part of our overall wellness that intersects with other aspects of our life. Our relationship with the natural environment can determine our level of environmental health. Some ways to boost our environmental health can include spending time in nature and engaging in pro-environmental behaviors.

Physical Health

When we think of health, we usually think of physical health first. What we may forget is the impact on other aspects of holistic health like mental and emotional health. Some ways to engage in physical wellness include exercise, nutritious eating, medical checkups, getting enough sleep, and reducing intake of harmful substances. Including physical health as a priority in our life can have amazing long term physical and mental health benefits.

Campus Recreation: Utilize the pool, fitness center, free classes, open recreation facilities, or get involved in intramurals.

Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program (DAAPP): Learn about resources, events, and prevention efforts surrounding substance misuse.

Health & Wellness: Get involved in activities, educational programming, and learn how to be in tune with your body’s needs.

SUU Student Health Clinic: SUU Students have access to free healthcare services at the clinic.

Social Health

Humans desire to connect and cultivate healthy relationships. Relationships affect our physical and mental wellness. Establishing boundaries, practicing conflict management, open communication, and building trust helps us have a healthy social network. By incorporating social health practices, we can transcend differences and provide leadership and active listening to those around us.

Relationship Health: Meet with a confidential advocate located in Health & Wellness Tuesdays from 1-5 and receive trainings on healthy relationships and consent.

ACES/Leads: Freshman can meet with their ACE for additional support and resource navigation, Sophomores meet with Leads.

Student Involvement & Leadership:The place for connection! Get involved in clubs, volunteering, and student government.

Utah Shakespeare Festival: Purchase a student pass for $40 and attend various plays for entertainment, education, and connection.

Emotional Health

This aspect of holistic health is focused on communicating and recognizing our feelings, having a positive self-image, practicing self care, and accepting who we are. It is normal to experience stress, but our mental health is impacted by the way we manage our stress so that it does not present itself in an unhealthy quantity. Using coping skills and normalizing help-seeking behaviors helps us learn and grow as we navigate the challenges of life. We can support others by being an active listener, being empathetic, checking in on others, and offering to get help together when needed.

Mental Health Resources: SUU provides resources, support, and services to address mental health issues at every level of concern. We are committed to helping all Thunderbirds Thrive, whether you are online or on-campus.

Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS): Meet with a mental health provider on campus who works with students to reduce the interference of everyday stress and also treat more serious conditions.

Resources/Education: Need help finding resources? Health & Wellness is not only the prevention office, but the resource connection office. Utilize Bi-Tapps, biofeedback, de-stress VR, the Wellness Room, de-stress items, sun therapy lamps, and more.

Dean of Students Office: The Dean of Students Office at Southern Utah University provides solutions, services, and support to help students navigate the University setting.

eCheckUpToGo: The Wellness eCheckUpToGo module is an online tool tailored to the SUU community to help you create a personalized plan to transform your well-being and create lasting healthy habits.

Financial Health

College can be overwhelming with learning to navigate FAFSA, loans, scholarships, rent, etc. Learning how to budget improves financial wellness as you form sustainable habits and allow yourself to focus more on your academics and financial goals and less on your monetary stressors.

Financial Wellness: Get assistance in completing the FAFSA, applying for scholarships, learning to budget and overcoming financial hardships to stay in school.

Financial Aid:Did you know 84% of students are eligible for some type of financial aid? Through scholarships, grants or loans, there is money available for everyone to attend school.

Hope Pantry: Receive essential food and toiletry items to SUU and STECH students, as well as educational opportunities to develop food budgeting, meal planning, and cooking skills.

Spiritual Health

Spiritual health supports us tuning into and refining our guiding values that give purpose to our lives and help us find our place in the universe. Just like with all aspects of health, spirituality looks different for different people. This can include activities such as meditation, yoga, mindfulness, religion, art, music, prayer, volunteering, etc. all of which help us overcome challenges.

LDS Institute: religious education for young adults ages 18 to 30. Institute provides an opportunity for students to strengthen their Christian beliefs.
