Scholarships & Financial Aid for Theatre Arts/Dance

Southern Utah University offers a variety of scholarships. We recommend that students apply for general leadership and academic scholarships offered through the university. For more information on these types of scholarships and specific deadlines, contact the SUU Financial Aid Office directly.

Departmental Scholarships

Theatre Arts and Dance is able to offer some talent and mission based scholarships to students interested in majoring within the department.  To be considered for a departmental scholarship all students must be admitted to Southern Utah University and enroll as a full-time theatre arts or dance major while maintaining a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.  The department does not offer scholarships to students not majoring in theatre or dance.  Students selected to receive scholarships will be notified by the end of April, all departmental scholarships must be renewed each year.

Audition Dates for Scholarships

The department offers at least two live audition date every year for scholarships.  If you are unable to make one of the dates below we may be able to accommodate an audition in another way.  To request other accommodation please contact our office Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm at (435) 586-7746 or e-mail Jacque Marchant at marchantj@suu.edu.  This year’s dates are:

Theatre Arts Scholarships

Application

If you are interested in auditioning or interviewing for a Theatre Arts scholarship your first step is to fill out the online Audition Application for Theatre Scholarships.  At the end of the application you will be promoted to upload both a headshot and resume.  After you have submitted your materials we will contact you to schedule an audition time and make sure you do not have any questions.   You are also welcome to contact our office Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm at (435) 586-7746 or e-mail Jacque Marchant at marchantj@suu.edu.

Requirements

Acting/Directing/Education Focus
  • Current Headshot

  • Current Resume

  • 2 Contrasting Monologues (not to exceed 3 minutes collectively) It is good if one is Shakespeare, but not required.

  • *Optional: 1 singing selection (not to exceed 1 minute. Please bring your own accompaniment. If you require an accompanist, it is your responsibility to arrange for one. A CD player, iPod player and piano will be provided.  Please note this does not replace a monologue but is performed in addition to it.

Design/Technical Focus

  • Portfolio

  • 20 minute interview

Dance Scholarships and Placement

Application

Placement

Placement auditions, for major level coursework, is required for all incoming students majoring in dance. If you cannot attend the live auditions on these days, please plan to audition the first day of class to be assigned the class that is right for you. It is also possible to arrange for an audition by attending classes on a Monday during Spring Semester to be observed and to perform your solo. Please contact the Theatre and Dance office to make arrangements.  The goal of our faculty is for each student to be successful and the first step is to make sure that each student is placed in the appropriate level dance course.

Requirements

Audition requirements for dance scholarships are the same as placement auditions. You do not need to sign up for a time to audition. You will be placed on the list when your application is received. The process includes:

  • Two group technique classes (ballet and modern dance)

  • A one minute solo (choreographed by the student applicant)

  • An interview with the dance faculty
