Student Outreach Non-Clinical Case Management
Non-clinical case management at SUU refers to professional support services provided to students who are facing personal, academic, or life challenges that may interfere with their success as students. It’s not therapy or clinical counseling; instead, it’s a support-oriented, resource-focused role designed to help students navigate college life, any difficulties, and connect with the right services on and off campus.
What case managers do:
- Meet with students one-on-one to understand their situation, needs, and strengths by offering attentive, respectful support and genuinely hearing their concerns.
- Work with students to clarify their goals, support their academic accountability, and collaboratively develop an action plan that addresses challenges and fosters success.
- Advocate for students, ensuring their needs are heard and helping them navigate university processes and policies.
- Connect students with campus and community resources, from academic support to wellness and financial assistance; such as Title IX, Financial Aid, Dean of Students, etc.
- Guide students through next steps, clarifying options (like withdrawal or academic planning) and helping them make informed decisions.
- Follow up on progress and adjust plans as needed to keep students moving forward.
What it isn’t:
- It’s not clinical counseling or mental health therapy
- These services are offered through SUU’s mental health resources like CAPS, TimelyCare, and CCAC.
- It doesn’t involve diagnosing or treating mental health conditions
Why it matters:
Non-clinical case management plays an important role in helping students navigate obstacles that could otherwise hinder their academic progress or sense of well-being. Case managers work with students with empathy and respect, offering guidance, advocacy, and connection to appropriate resources so students feel supported in figuring out their next steps and can stay engaged and thrive in the university environment.
Who can I meet with?
Students can meet with members of the Student Outreach & Support team who are Non-Clinical Case Managers and support staff, including Psychology Doctorate Graduate Assistants and Bachelor of Social Work Interns. Whether the concern is academic, personal, or procedural (like exploring options around withdrawal or leave), we are ready to listen and help you explore your options and connect with appropriate resources.
