Intensive English Program (IEP)
The Intensive English Program (IEP) at Southern Utah University is a fully immersive experience designed to help you master academic English quickly and confidently. Instead of just memorizing grammar rules, you will engage in dynamic lessons that build the real-world reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills needed for university success.
We balance rigorous language training with a supportive, low-stress environment to ensure you feel confident from day one. Through an easy-to-use digital platform and a built-in orientation week, we give you a clear, reliable path to achieve true academic fluency.
The Value of Immersive Learning
While independent study programs are convenient, they usually lack the real-world practice you need to talk comfortably with others. Our university program gives you important benefits that self-taught apps simply cannot match.
Going through the IEP prepares you for American university expectations, helping you excel the moment you begin working on your undergraduate degree.
Build real-world communication skills
by stepping away from limited language apps, working on meaningful projects, and engaging with fluent English speakers.
Excel in US Academic Culture
by learning exactly what US teachers and students expect in class so you can easily join conversations and make new friends with confidence.
Learn directly from professors
who provide the personalized guidance needed to speak clearly and master even the toughest English grammar.
Walking into a new classroom can feel intimidating, but you don't have to leave your identity at the door. Our instructors value your unique experiences and opinions. Whether you are explaining a traditional family recipe or talking about global priorities from your perspective, we value your unique voice. You will build your English fluency and classroom confidence in ways that are true to your unique identity.
How the Program Works
The Intensive English Program has eight progressive levels. Each level takes one six-week term* to complete for full-time students, making it easy to track your advancement.
- You will take a written language and oral language class together during every six-week term to build your skills evenly.
- On-campus, full-time students spend 18 hours per week in class, which allows you to finish two full levels every semester.
- Your English classes do not just prepare you for speaking and writing in college. Your courses start giving you undergraduate university credits that count directly toward your future undergraduate degree as soon as you reach Level 3 or higher in the Intensive English program.
A full listing of IEP classes can be found in the SUU course catalog.
*Students who begin IEP Level 6 at the start of a full university semester (Spring or Fall) will be placed into a semester-long, part-time track. This strategic layout allows you to dual-enroll in your undergraduate degree courses alongside your final IEP classes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Our curriculum features two Foundational ESL levels and six IEP levels. Full-time students take six weeks to finish one level, allowing most students to complete two full levels every semester.
Applicants can send a certified score from an approved English proficiency test as part of their application. Alternatively, the ALCC can send a link to admitted applicants with instructions to take a secure online English proficiency test. The ALCC uses these test scores to place students in the level that best meets their current skills.
Our classes are highly personal and interactive. Instead of sitting in a massive lecture hall, you will work closely in small, collaborative groups with other international peers and professors.
Cramming for a test doesn't prepare you for the fast pace of an American college classroom. The IEP track gives you a competitive advantage by helping you master university study habits, build a close social circle, and protect your future GPA before you start your degree.
Your coursework begins counting toward your official college record as soon as you reach IEP Level 3. At this stage, our courses become university-accredited, allowing you to earn undergraduate credits while you finish mastering English.
The Foundational ESL Program is an introductory track that builds basic everyday vocabulary and listening skills for beginners. The IEP features six higher levels focused on advanced academic writing, grammar accuracy, and university presentation skills.
Dual Enrollment is a pathway for international students who reach IEP Level 6 at the start of the Fall 1 or Spring 1 terms. It allows you to take your final language classes while enrolling in 6 to 9 credits of standard university major courses at the exact same time.
We will send you a link to take a placement test from your home to ensure you start at the perfect level. The ALCC covers the entire cost of this test for newly admitted students who do not have a prior standardized score.
On-campus students get a fully immersive experience with access to all SUU campus buildings, fitness centers, and libraries. Your tuition also includes entry to local sporting events and campus social gatherings, like the weekly VISAS Café conversation club.
