Stress Management During Finals Week

There’s a reason that the week before finals week is colloquially called “dead week.” Between papers, exams, presentations, and projects, it can be difficult to make time for anything that isn’t related to school. Thankfully, there are a few things that you can do leading up to and during finals week to keep your mind as cool as the weather outside.
Take Breaks
When your brain is running at a hundred miles per hour, it’s important to take a step back and let your mind rest. If you need a quiet place to go on campus, the Health and Wellness Center has a wellness room that is free for students to use from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Additionally, on Mondays from 3 to 5 pm, the Student Outreach and Support and Health and Wellness offices host sensory friendly hours where you can find fidget toys, low light levels, and calming music.
Get Outside
Whether it’s walking to campus, playing pickleball, or hiking a trail, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities in Cedar City. SUU Outdoors hosts events throughout the semester to help students connect with the beautiful landscape that Southern Utah has to offer. These trips are free for current students. There are many hiking trails available as well! However, check to make sure they are open, as some of them may be inaccessible during inclement weather.
Stretching
Even when the weather is less than ideal, there are still ways that you can keep your blood flowing. Stretching can be incorporated into the busiest of schedules. Whether it’s right when you wake up, before you go to bed, or in between assignments, make sure to take a few minutes to look away from your computer screen and stretch your legs. Not only is this beneficial for blood flow, but it can also help reduce eye strain.
Prioritize Sleep
It’s tempting to stay up until three in the morning to cram for that chemistry exam, but your body and brain will thank you if you get a proper night’s sleep. Memories are consolidated while you sleep. This means that you will likely be able to remember more content if you study, then get a full night of sleep. Proper rest also promotes a strong immune system, decreasing the chances that you’ll get sick during or right after finals week.
Ask for Help
Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. The SUU Tutoring Center, Writing Center, and Public Speaking Center are here to help you crush your finals. Not sure what resources you need? The Student Outreach and Support team can help you develop a plan of action to succeed academically. We’re in this together. Finish out the semester strong, T-Birds!
