SUU PREP New Student Application
Dear SUU PREP Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in the Southern Utah University Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (PREP). PREP is a multi-year summer STEM experience where students learn, grow, and take on meaningful challenges through hands-on projects in engineering, coding, math, and real-world problem-solving. If selected, you’ll build confidence, explore new ideas, and develop skills that prepare you for future STEM opportunities.
Before you begin your application, please keep the following important information in mind:
Program Expectations
PREP has a strict Student Code of Conduct and Attendance Policy. Please review these in our Procedures Manual before applying. Violations of these policies may result in dismissal from the program. PREP is designed to challenge you academically—students should be ready to work hard, stay positive, and push through difficult concepts. Applicants must have an 86% or higher in their current math class to apply.
What You’ll Need to Apply:
-
SSID Number (State Student Identification Number):
This is a 7-digit state-issued number used for school testing. It is not your lunch number or listed in PowerSchool. Your parent/guardian will need to contact your school’s registrar to obtain it. This number helps us track academic progress as part of PREP’s research components. Please see the research release forms or email suuprep@suu.edu with questions. -
Most Recent End-of-Quarter Grades:
Upload a screenshot or scan of your most recent end-of-quarter grades. Students with any Ds, Fs, Ns, or Us will not be accepted. Applications are reviewed competitively using a rubric—not first come, first served—so if you need to improve a grade before applying, you may wait until the end of the current quarter. Be award that applications close on February 25, we can only accept late applications if there is still space available in the program. -
Teacher Contact Information:
Provide the email address of the teacher you want to receive your recommendation form. A math teacher is strongly recommended. -
Student Essay (150 words minimum):
You will answer the prompt: “Why I Want to Attend SUU PREP.” We encourage you to write and edit your essay in Word, Google Docs, or another program before pasting it into the application. Essays are heavily weighted in the selection process. - Essay submissions may be reviewed to ensure they reflect the student’s own original work, including checks for AI-generated content. -
Parent/Guardian Availability:
Parents must be present to review and sign required forms during the application process.
We look forward to reviewing your application and will notify you and your parent/guardian of your admission status by mid-February.
Good luck, and thank you for applying to SUU PREP!
