Short-Term
Short-term study abroad programs involve groups of participants being led by an SUU faculty or staff member abroad, similar to an extended, international field trip. They generally take place over the summer, spring, or winter breaks. Summer programs range between 2 and 4 weeks long and offer 3-6 course credits. Non-credit bearing programs, called Cultural Immersions, usually are about 1 week in length.
Programs change year to year, going to new locations and focusing on different areas of study (i.e. Communication in Fiji and Tonga, Psychology in Greece, etc.). Programs for the year are usually announced in October.
Requirements:
- 2.5 minimum GPA
- 3 letters of recommendation - at least 2 academic (required through online application)

Additional Short-Term Info
- After applying, a $300 application fee will be charged to the applying student's SUU account. That $300 will act as a deposit toward the total study abroad program fee. The application fee is refundable if a student is not accepted into a short-term study abroad program or if they officially withdraw their application through the Office of Learning Abroad before they are accepted or before the application deadline has passed.
- Short-term programs may not be used to help a student achieve full-time student status and are not eligible for tuition-based financial aid (such as FAFSA). Other scholarships may still be applicable.
- Most program fees do not include the cost of airfare or meals. Use the Short-Term Study Abroad Cost Estimator as a tool to financially prepare to study abroad.
- After being accepted into a program. students will be emailed information about how to find and submit all pre-departure documents such as travel authorizations and emergency contact forms. The application for Office of Learning Abroad scholarships will also be emailed to the students accepted into qualified programs.
Short-Term Frequently Asked Questions
Most of our SUU faculty-led short-term programs run in May and June, and the list of upcoming programs is usually available in mid-October. You can view all of our currently available programs in the Program Directory.
Yes. However, students taking part in an SUU short-term study abroad program do not need to purchase international insurance individually because the cost of international insurance is included in the study abroad program fee.
While priority will be given to SUU students, non-SUU students may apply for short-term programs. Faculty and staff leading the programs (Program Directors) may accept non-student applicants on a case-by-case basis. Non-students include community members, spouses, friends, students at other universities, etc. who are not currently enrolled at SUU.
A $200 non-student fee will be charged to a non-student participant in addition to the study abroad program fee. Non-student participants will be expected to engage in all aspects of the study abroad program: follow the provided itinerary, submit the same travel documents required of students, and abide by all of the program rules (including the SUU Student Code of Conduct). The main difference in non-student participation is that, since they are not an SUU student and do not have an active T-Number, they are not eligible to earn course credit.
Non-SUU participants who are students at other universities may be able to temporarily transfer to SUU for the summer semester in order to earn credits on their short-term program. Those hoping to pursue this option MUST reach out to Tayah Nelson (tayahnelson@suu.edu) after they've been accepted into their short-term program and follow the directions she shares.

Semester Exchange
Semester exchange programs give SUU students the opportunity to study abroad at one of our 60+ partner universities around the world for a semester or a full year. While abroad, students take a full-time load of courses that can transfer back to SUU and help them toward their degree. Students on exchange only pay their typical SUU tuition.
A few of SUU's partner schools are marked as "Non-Exchange". "Non-Exchange" means students will be responsible for paying the host school's tuition rather than SUU's. Questions about exchange and non-exchange schools can be directed to Zoe Prettyman

Semester Exchange Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The Office of Learning Abroad requires that travelers purchase the insurance policy from CISI that has been negotiated for SUU travelers. Those taking part in a short-term program through the OLA do not need to purchase international insurance personally as the cost of international insurance is included in the advertised program fee.

National Student Exchange
National Student Exchange (NSE) is a semester or year-long study abroad program that takes place in Canada, the United States, or U.S. territories. Choose from nearly 200 schools. Pay the host school's resident tuition or SUU tuition only and apply your financial aid and scholarships just as if you were taking classes at SUU.

How to Apply
- Fill out the Application Form.
- Fill out the Study Statement to include with your application.
- Pay the Application Fee (non-refundable after the application is submitted).
- (For International students only) fill out the International Student Exchange Form.
After you're accepted, you'll work with your Academic Advisor to fill out a Learning Agreement.
Deadlines
The application deadline for the following academic year (Fall and Spring) is February 28. Some schools will accept students after the deadline.
National Student Exchange Frequently Asked Questions
Students must pay a one-time application fee of $300. This application fee is not refundable once your application is turned in to the SUU NSE Coordinator. Students must also pay a $300 concurrent enrollment fee for each semester on exchange. Housing, meals, books, insurance, etc, is paid at the host school. Students accepted on Plan A also pay host school resident tuition at the host school. Plan B resident students pay SUU resident tuition to the SUU Office of International Programs for the incoming Plan B students. Plan B non-resident and international students will pay SUU Academic Programs Abroad SUU non-resident tuition and fees.
An important word about Plan B: A student who makes himself available on Plan B , and is accepted by the host school on Plan B, is obligated to pay the SUU Office of Study Abroad Programs Abroad SUU resident or non-resident tuition (whichever appropriate) even if the student withdraws from the exchange (except in the case of serious illness). It is important to understand that SUU does not provide funds to pay SUU tuition for incoming Plan B students, so the money is provided by outbound SUU Plan B students leaving on exchange.
