Chinese Program
Mandarin Chinese is spoken not only in the People's Republic of China and Taiwan but also in significant and influential Chinese communities across Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, and Mongolia. With over 873 million native speakers, Mandarin Chinese holds the distinction of being the most commonly spoken first language worldwide. By learning Chinese, you not only gain the ability to directly communicate with a significant portion of the global population but also embark on a linguistic adventure that presents both challenges and delightful experiences. This language, which is notably distinct from English, offers a unique set of hurdles to overcome, while simultaneously providing an enriching journey filled with exciting cultural discoveries and personal growth.
Currently, the Department of Languages and Philosophy only offers a minor in Chinese for undergraduate students. This program addresses the specific needs of individuals who are interested in Chinese language and culture. It is strategically designed to equip participants with the language skills and cultural competence required to pursue a future career related to a greater Chinese-speaking region including mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. Students can take a variety of courses in language, literature, visual arts, film, and culture. The program will not only enable students to develop their Chinese language skills, but also engage students deeply with cultural practices.
