Tips for Chinese Minor Students

Start Early

At SUU, students who start learning Chinese from scratch can expect to complete the minor program in as little as two years (4 semesters), provided they start early and plan accordingly. I encourage you to discuss this with your academic advisor(s) or with Sandy Zhang and develop a study plan for yourself as early as possible!

Study Abroad

Every year, students have the opportunity to participate in a three-week study abroad program in a Mandarin-speaking country. During this program, you will have the chance to engage with local individuals in authentic linguistic situations and interact with college students from the area. This immersive experience allows you to make substantial progress in your language skills within a short period of time. By immersing yourself in the culture, you will gain a deeper understanding and experience that cannot be replicated in a traditional classroom setting.

Continuity in Language Learning

Maintaining an uninterrupted flow in language learning is crucial. Students are advised to take Chinese 1010, 1020, 2010, and 2020 courses consecutively. Upon completion of CHIN2020 you will have acquired sufficient fluency in the language to choose 4000-level Chinese culture and literature courses.
