College is an exciting time to learn, grow, and experience new things! It’s also a great time to get outside of your comfort zone and make some new friends. Meeting new people can be difficult, but it can lead to lifelong friendships, unique opportunities, and wonderful memories. At Southern Utah University, there’s a place for everyone.
Here are five tips to help you find your place on campus.
- Utilize Student Resources
The Nest is SUU’s student help center. T-Birds can find answers to their questions, a place to do homework, and any other help they may need at the Nest. Students can also receive guidance from aces and peer-mentors. If you are in need of a friend, there’s no shortage of friendly faces at the Nest!
If you are attending SUU from abroad, the International Student and Scholar Services is a great resource for international students. Their student ambassadors host numerous events that foster cultural diversity, promote global awareness, and cultivate a rich university experience for all students. - Attend School Social Events
T-Bird Chit Chats are a weekly social event that gives students a safe place to chat with their peers. It’s a great place to find new friends and establish long-lasting connections. It’s held in the Sharwan Smith Student Center living room. All T-Birds are welcome to join the unique activities every week.
Throughout the school year, SUU hosts many events that are great opportunities to connect with others, such as dances, parties, and Thunderbird traditions. By participating in the Tradition Keepers activities, such as the upcoming Bread and Soup Nite, T-birds can be involved in their community and participate in fun activities with their peers. - Join a Club
With a wide variety of student clubs and organizations, T-birds can find groups where they can connect with their peers, explore current or new interests, and make wonderful memories for themselves and others. It can be easy to get overwhelmed in big crowds during large events, so clubs offer the chance to still meet plenty of new people without the pressure of any large crowds. It’s also an incredible chance to bond with other students and cultivate lasting friendships. - Volunteer
SUU’s Community Engagement Center has a myriad of student volunteer opportunities , such as volunteering at SUU’s HOPE Pantry , which provides essential food, toiletry items, and education to T-birds in need. There are many other opportunities where students can serve the Cedar City community, grow their network, make new friendships, and receive hands-on education.
SUU Community is dedicated to strengthening the bond between SUU and the local community by enhancing collaboration, communication, and sustainability. They also provide educational opportunities while celebrating the wonderful community here. T-birds can make unforgettable memories while making a positive change in the Cedar City community. - Get Involved in Student Leadership
Student Involvement and Leadership exists to help all T-birds have a meaningful experience on campus by getting students involved, making connections, and developing essential leadership skills. STIL guides all students to accomplish their goals and create a welcoming community. There are plenty of involvement and leadership programs t-birds can join, such as SUUSA, where they can help other students and get to know many people.
You will be surprised how far just a little bit of intentional effort will go in finding your sense of belonging at SUU. Strong connections, great friends, and a wonderful network can make your college experience full of unforgettable memories. Everyone can find a place to belong at SUU.
