Secondary Admissions Procedures

Secondary students completing SUU’s secondary education program must apply for admission to the education program. The purpose of this process is to help the Department of Teacher Education ensure that secondary students are on track as they progress towards the Secondary Block courses and/or student teaching. Secondary students should apply for education program admission:

• The semester they take EDUC 2100, when EDUC 2100 is required by their program; OR
• The semester before they complete their methods of teaching (3900/4900) course, if EDUC 2100 is not required

Below you will find the process and requirements for education program admission:

• Applicants must complete an online application.
• Applicants must have taken and passed all "General Education" requirements (30 credits).
• 3.0 cumulative GPA required for admission. No course with a "C-" grade or below within education courses or major courses is accepted for licensure. You must receive a "C" grade or higher. This includes any transfer credit. Students must maintain a semester 3.0 GPA. A lower GPA will result in probation. After two semesters of GPA below 3.0 admission will be revoked. A formal appeal through the Department Chair is required for reinstatement.
• Background check/fingerprints are required. Before a teacher candidate can work in the public schools in extended practicums and clinical practice (student teaching), a criminal background check must be completed. You might be required to have your background check completed prior to admission, as it is needed in EDUC 2200 and 2400. Please refer to the following link for detailed instructions on how to complete this step.
• Dispositions. Dispositions are an ongoing part of the admission process in Teacher Education. They will be collected in each course and violating department, college, University, or community ethical standards will affect continued participation and/or admission into education courses and programs. Dispositions begin in pre-admission courses, and if there is an issue, a meeting will be set up with the professor and department chair.

Finalizing admission to Teacher Education: It is the responsibility of the student to make sure all components of the admission process are complete. Notification of admission status will be completed approximately three weeks after all necessary information is submitted. Students who are denied admission may appeal through the Exemption Committee or reapply in the future.

As part of your entrance to the teacher education program you will be asked to complete a self-assessment. This self-assessment is only used to learn what you think of your own, current abilities to meet the Utah State Board of Education’s teacher preparation competencies and will not affect your entrance to the education preparation program. This will take place in your SPED 2030 course.

Policy for Transfer Students: All transfer students must have their teacher education credit hours evaluated by the College of Education Academic Advisor and Chair. Courses older than ten years will not be accepted. Some programs and endorsements may vary.

To be admitted into Secondary Ed. Block: Follow the directions on the Secondary Block Admittance webpage.

To be admitted into Student Teaching: Students will be invited to apply for Student Teaching during their Block semester.

NOTE: ALL Education Students will need to successfully meet the requirements of the Professional Learning Plan (PLP) during their student teaching semester before they will be recommended for licensure. This will be accomplished by registering for EDUC 4930 and ELED 4980. The PLP will replace the PPAT; students will be prepared during courses and required class workshops.
