Secondary Block Admittance

In order to go into student teaching, all Secondary education students are required to first go through a series of courses (Block) that both prepares you for the classroom and gives you practical experience in a classroom setting.

Secondary "Block" consists of two courses taken together, usually in the semester before student teaching. Alongside the two courses, students will be required to participate in various practicum settings.

Students enrolled in Secondary English Education, Art Education, and Music Education do not require a block application or admission to the program. You'll only apply for student teaching.

Requirements By Application for Block

• Current 3.0 GPA is required
• All major courses require a C or higher
• Satisfactory dispositions reports from the department's student review process
• Completion of a background check through SUU; an SUU ID badge must be worn during practicum hours and will not be provided to students until their background check has cleared. Background checks from a student's local school district will not be accepted.

• You must complete all practicum experiences in Utah schools. No out of state or out of country applications will be accepted.

• You must not be employed full-time as a teacher of record in a school. The Block experience constitutes service learning and you will not be compensated for this service.

• Enrolled in SUU Secondary Education program that requires the SCED Block. Note that Art, Music, and English Education students do not complete the SCED Block.

• You can apply while anticipating the following requirements:
  • Completion or registration for all required education coursework. Education and content courses may be taken concurrently with the SCED Block.
  • Note: You will not be registered for SCED 3570 or SCED 3590 until all requirements are met.

Steps to be admitted to Block

1. Complete a background check through SUU.
2. Apply to Block after being admitted to the college. See link to application above.
   • Fall Block: Apply March 31st for upcoming semester
   • Spring Block: Apply October 31st for upcoming semester

Secondary Block Practicum Information

• Secondary Block students are assigned to Iron County School District classrooms for practicum by the Field Services Coordinator.
• Secondary students should not contact school districts or schools inquiring about placements.
