Special Education Minor with Professional Licensure
Elementary or secondary education students admitted in the Fall 2026 term and later have the option of exploring special education. The Special Education Minor with professional licensure is a great option for any elementary or secondary education major interested in learning more about diverse learners and special education.
The minor is earned by completing all of the following SPED courses with a grade of C or higher:
- SPED 2010 - Educating Exceptional Students 3 Credit(s)
- SPED 4100 - Programming and Management 3 Credit(s)
- SPED 4110 - History and Law 3 Credit(s)
- SPED 4120 - Creating and Managing a Learning Environment 3 Credit(s)
- SPED 4130 - Intervention Strategies in ELA for Students with Disabilities 3 Credit(s)
- SPED 4145 - Assistive Technology, Collaboration, and Post-Secondary Transition 3 Credit(s)
- SPED 4160 - Assessment for Learning and Data Driven Decisions for Special Education 3 Credit(s)
- SPED 4170 - Intervention Strategies in Math for Students with Disabilities 3 Credit(s)
- SPED 4980 - Special Education Student Teaching 3 Credit(s); this course is taken during the same semester as ELED/SCED student teaching.
In addition, students must complete the Utah literacy assessment requirement, which is described below.
Literacy Assessment Requirement
All elementary and secondary-level students seeking licensure in special education must earn a score of 240 or higher on the Utah Foundations of Reading Assessment. Students may elect to take literacy-related classes beyond SPED 4130 to help prepare for the Utah Foundations of Reading Assessment.
Note that the following classes are 1) required in the Elementary Education BA/BS program but 2) optional for all Secondary Education students.
- EDRG 2520 Foundations of Elementary Literacy Instruction
- EDRG 2710 Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Written Expression
- EDRG 3010 Language Acquisition, Early Literacy, and Phonics
