No! More than 60% of our band is composed of non-music majors from disciplines across campus.
While many of our incoming students believe this when they first join, most find themselves having a lot of downtime once the school year begins. This is the perfect time to join organizations like the marching band. You won't regret it!
Yes! The marching band at SUU is one of the only organizations which pays its members. In addition, section leaders, drum majors, and student staff receive extra stipends within the SUU Athletic Bands.
There is nothing like being a part of a large group of diverse students working together towards a common goal. We perform great shows and represent the University at home and on away game trips. You will gain lifelong friendships and a love for SUU! #GoTBirds
The marching band meets Monday/Wednesday/Friday (4:30pm-6:30pm). The course title is MUSC 3200.

Marching Band Auditions
The Thunderbird Marching Band has placement auditions for all members of the group. Each member receives a stipend or scholarship, and must complete a placement audition video showcasing their skills on their instrument of choice. Winds and Percussion have small excerpts to play, and the color guard videos are more specialized. Info for these auditions can be found below.
The "Sound Machine" is the basketball pep band at Southern Utah University. They attend most home men's and women's games and travel to major tournaments including conference tournaments or NCAA March Madness Tournament.
