From Red Cliffs to Salty Shores: Desert Landscapes from SUMA's Collection

January 11 - April 25, 2025

Anchored by three portraits of Zion by famed local painter Jimmie Jones, who spent his artistic career examining and knowing the canyons and waterways of Southern Utah, this exhibition celebrates the harsh, yet wondrous landscape that has inspired generations of artists. This selection of artworks drawn from SUMA’s collection illuminates the intrinsic relationship between media and mood, style and spirit, in the choices each of the seven artists has made to capture the essence of place. 

If the concurrent Salt Lines exhibition encourages meditation on our connection to our local landscape and compels consideration of our relationship to water, then the works in this show can serve as the instruments of such introspection. These images are reminders of what we have, what is at stake, and what binds us to each other, across high deserts, saltwater bodies, and freshwater sources.
